The University of Pavia
was formally established in 1361 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, although there had
been a school of divinity here as early as 825. The oldest colleges, dating from the 16th
century are the Collegio Borromeo and the Collegio Ghislieri. Another three have since
been added and they are now all linked via the Pavia University System, Instituto
Universitario di Studi Superiori (IUSS).
You can wander around the grounds, the historic
botanical garden

WORTH A TRIP
OLTREPÒ PAVESE
To really escape the urban bustle of Milan and its peripheral cities, consider hiring a car for the day and heading
for the rolling hills of Oltrepò Pavese, just south of Pavia. Oltrepò is the Tuscany of the north and riots broke out
in the Middle Ages when Milanese markets were cut off from the regions wineries. These days the area is a pic-
