One of those investigated but never convicted is Milan's self-made media mogul Silvio
Berlusconi. He moved into politics in the 1990s and has since been elected prime minister
three times, most recently in 2008, although he was forced to resign his post in 2011 after
losing his majority amid the growing European debt crisis. The city's centre-left mayor,
Giuliano Pisapia (the city's first mayor from a left-wing party), elected in 2011, runs a co-
alition government with various centrist and left-wing parties.

Milan's centre is conveniently compact. The splendid cathedral sits in a vast piazza which
throngs with tourists and touts. Further west, the city's interior design showrooms cluster
around Piazza San Babila amid grand Novecento and Liberty buildings.
