2.1 Pictogram Selection by Preliminary Survey
Since it would have been difficult for our questionnaire survey of pictogram
interpretations to cover every one of the large number of pictograms used on mobile
phones, we conducted a preliminary survey for each carrier (au, DoCoMo and
Softbank) to select the pictograms to be covered.
The respondents were 38 male and female university students. We asked the
respondents representing each carrier which pictograms they frequently use. Based on
their responses, we selected 24 pictograms for each carrier, each with a usage
frequency of at least 50%. Figure 4 shows the 24 pictograms selected for each carrier.
Our pictogram interpretation questionnaires covered these 24 pictograms for each
carrier.

2.2 Pictogram Interpretation Questionnaires
Our questionnaires were designed to compile pictogram interpretations and usage
examples. Before we distributed the questionnaires, we asked respondents which
mobile phone carrier they use and gave them the questionnaire created for their
