in an extraction yield of 66 (stalks) and 57.6% (seed hulls), respectively. The equivalent hydrolysis
of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin was 12.6 and 11.5%, 66.3 and 62.9%, and 44.9 and 71.9%,
for sunflower stalks and hulls, respectively. However, more efforts are needed to improve upon the
pretreatment strategies. In this study, we compared the acidic saccharification of untreated and
enzymatic saccharification of pretreated sunflower stalks and hulls, which revealed a significantly
better saccharification with our indigenous cellulase (25 FPU and incubation conditions of 50°C,
pH 4.8, and 72 h) from T. reesei RUT C-30. The ethanol fermentation of saccharified substrates by
cofermentation with S. cerevisiae and P. tannophilus revealed an ethanol yield of 0.4 and 0.45 g/g
from sunflower stalks and hulls, respectively, in a 15-L fermenter that may be scaled-up.
