The second major engineering project is a piece of technical prowess. The idea behind
this herculean scheme is to transfer water from the east coast, where supply exceeds de-
mand, to the dry and heavily populated west coast. The solution someone came up with
was to drill a tunnel 30km long and 3.5m high right through the island! Tunnelling began
in 1989, but needless to say they hit a few hitches along the way. It is reckoned that the
project should be completed by 2015.
