Ferme-Auberge Desprairies
( 0692 64 61 70, 0262 37 20 27; www.ferme-auberge-desprairies.com ; 44 Route de Matouta, Matouta; d incl break-
fast €40, dinner €22; ) One of the best things about this peaceful inn is the road to it, which
travels through sugar-cane fields despite being only a couple of kilometres from the coast.
There are a few signs of wear and tear in the six rooms but they're kept tidy and in this
location for this price, you won't hear anyone complaining. The owners also prepare deli-
cious home-cooked meals. Follow the D37 to the east to get here.
B&B
Rougail Mangue
( 0262 31 55 09; www.rougailmangue.com ; 12 Rue Marcel Pagnol, Vincendo; s/d/tr/q €39/49/63/76, bungalow €63;
) You'd never guess it from the road but this 'boutique guesthouse' is as wel-
coming as an old friend's hug thanks to its Italian owner, Cosimo. The ground floor is oc-
cupied by a smart lounge area, one six-bed room, two squeaky-clean quads and a cheery
double opening onto a well-tended garden. Air-con is extra (€10). For a higher degree of
privacy, book the cute-as-can-be bungalow, with stupendous sea views. The coup de grâce
is the glorious pool, with the ocean as a backdrop (look at the picture on the website - no
Photoshopping), and the outdoor Jacuzzi (€5). Add €3 for breakfast (or €15 for a gargan-
tuan brunch), best enjoyed alfresco under a gazebo. There's also a kitchen. It's on the
main road, between Langevin and Vincendo.
GUESTHOUSE €€
La Médina du Sud
( 0262 37 32 51; 23 Chemin de la Marine, Vincendo; d for 2 nights €130; ) There's nothing
Moorish in this modern building by the turn-off for the beach, except the owner's origins.
The six flats are characterless but fully equipped, well proportioned and perfectly service-
able, with the added bonus of a pool. The owner also runs a restaurant next door.

Les Grands Monts
( 0692 17 53 42, 0262 23 60 16; 2a Impasse Sabine; d incl breakfast €110; ) Looking for a
night at some place extra special? Make a beeline for this lovely maison d'hôte in a histor-
ic building made of stones. It shelters three spacious, cocoon-like rooms that ingeniously
blend volcanic stones and hardwoods. However, the open bathrooms in two rooms may
not be to everyone's taste. The pool in the garden is a delight. It's in a cul-de-sac about
300m north of the RN2.
