In-Depth Information
reach a skate park. Leave your car here and walk for about five minutes down a path to
the shore…enjoy!
For a bird's-eye view of St-Jo and the coast, you can walk up to Piton Babet , the knoll
that lies between the main road and the ocean. It shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.
Sleeping & Eating
Accommodation options are thin on the ground in St-Jo; most visitors stay in B&Bs in the
Hauts or in Manapany-les-Bains.
La Case
( 0262 56 07 50; www.case.fr ; 2 Rue Jean Bart; d without bathroom €37, studio €50; ) If it wer-
en't located on the main road, this laid-back venture set in a well-groomed garden of col-
ourful vegetation would feel like a little oasis. The three rooms in the main house are
bright and airy with minimal decor and plain, functional furniture; toilets are shared. At
the back of the compound, the five impeccably maintained studios open onto a rectangular
pool. There isn't much atmosphere but it's a good base to explore the area. Breakfast costs
€5. On the eastern edge of town.

L'Arpège Austral
( 0692 70 74 12, 0262 56 36 89; arpegeaustral.minisite.fr; 53 Rue des Prunes; s/d incl breakfast €50/55; ) It's
wonderful to be so near St-Joseph (2.5km), yet in such a serene spot. Sylvie, your hostess,
offers two light-flooded rooms with sloping ceilings. For more privacy, the adjoining bun-
galow, sheathed with soothing ochres and decked out with a small private terrace, fits the
bill. Book in for a table d'hôte meal (€20) and you may sample a low-calorie carri on the
shady terrace. It's on the road to Grand Coude (follow the D33).
B&B €€
Au P'tit St Jo
( 0262 29 53 11; 229bis Rue Raphaël Babet; mains €10-24; lunch Tue-Fri, dinner Tue, Fri & Sat; ) Great
food served in welcoming surrounds at honest prices: the recipe for success sounds simple
but few manage it as well as this friendly, pocket-sized eatery tucked in an alley near the
post office. It made its name serving succulent meat dishes and burgers, but the chef also
knows his way around a fish. It's all delightfully decadent, especially as portions are en-
cyclopaedic in size. Adding to the fun is a bustling atmosphere and live music on week-
ends.
