Centre Ville
You'll find a scattering of attractive colonial-era edifices scattered in the centre, including
the old Hôtel de Ville OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (Place de la Mairie) , which started life as a coffee
warehouse for the French East India Company during the 18th century. The old colonial-
era train station is now occupied by the Café de la Gare - Latina Café ( Click here ) . Another
must-see is the Entrepôt Kervéguen OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (Rue du Four à Chaux) , which was
also used as a warehouse by the French East India Company. In the same area, keep your
eyes peeled for the médiathèque Raphaël Barquisseau OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (off Rue des Bons En-
fants) , another building dating from the thriving era of the French East India Company.
There are many other Creole mansions and houses that beg to be admired, especially
along Rue Marius et Ary Leblond. One of the grandest is the Sœurs de Saint-Joseph de Cluny
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (Rue Marius et Ary Leblond) complex, which was built in the late 18th
century. To the east, the neoclassical Hôtel de la Sous-Préfecture OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (Rue
Augustin Archambaud) is also worthy of interest.
Culture buffs shouldn't miss St-Pierre's other architectural gems such as the St-Pierre
Church OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (Rue Augustin Archambaud) , the splendid Attyaboul Massadjid
mosque OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (Rue François de Mahy; 9am-noon, 2-4pm) and the discreet Chinese
temple OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (Rue Marius et Ary Leblond) . West of the centre, the highly col-
ourful Tamil temple OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (Shri Mahabadra Karli; Ravine Blanche) is also well
worth a gander.
