A good find
in a bucolic property, behind the equestrian centre Écuries du Volcan. Has two doubles
and two quads, all scrubbed attentively. The all-wood bungalow is fully equipped and can
sleep five. There's also a smaller bungalow for couples. Bar breakfast (€5); no other meals
are provided but there are kitchen facilities.

The three six-bed dorms downstairs are OK and come with their own bathroom, but
the renovated double room upstairs really cuts the mustard, with its own terrace and views
of Piton des Neiges. The French owner is extra nice and offers to pick up walkers from the
GR® R2 walking trail (and drop them off the next morning), which passes a few kilo-
metres north of Bourg-Murat.

Not your average
gîte,
this little cracker is isolated on the Route Forestière du
Volcan about 5km from the centre of Bourg-Murat. Entering the property, you feel as if
you've stumbled onto the set of
Little House on the Prairie
. In the role of Charles Ingalls
you have amiable Pilou (or his son). The five dorms are neat and can sleep two to four
people. The whole place radiates a ramshackle air - from the quirky facade, which is en-
tirely covered with thongs, to the dining room, which is a Pandora's box of
objets lontan
(utensils and other knick-knacks from the old days). It also serves
plats du jour
(daily spe-
cials) at lunchtime.
