On a quiet back street close to the centre, this little Creole place with
lemon-yellow walls and green shutters harbours a clutch of diminutive but bright rooms
and a well-appointed communal kitchen. The complimentary rum in the glass flasks on
the shelves will help you forget that this place is a tad overpriced. Families will opt for the
larger, self-contained bungalow at the rear.

One of Cilaos' largest establishments, Le Vieux Cep has its pros and cons - on the
plus side it's welcoming and well located; it enjoys great views of Piton des Neiges; it has
solid amenities, including a restaurant, a small sauna and a pool; and many rooms have
been refreshed. The minuses: said rooms are cramped and lack character; it's a bit over-
priced; and the attached restaurant is quite expensive. There are plans to build a new wing
with 25 larger rooms.

Cilaos' biggest hotel is a colourful place with a touch of a hunting lodge about its foyer.
The rooms are serviceable and crisp but the decor and furnishings are in dire need of a
freshen-up. A heated pool, a sauna, a bar and a restaurant round out the offerings.

This well-run three-star abode in a restored Creole home offers a smooth stay, with 15
rooms that are imaginatively decked out in local style; those upstairs boast mountain
views (rooms 15 and 16 are the best). The owner has set up a wine cellar in the basement
and offers tastings of Cilaos tipples (€5) when he's in town.
