In-Depth Information
There are several peaceful villages within 10km of St-Leu that offer accommodation in a
relaxed, rural setting. Many places boast bird's-eye views down to the coast.
Caz' Océane
( 0692 74 63 94, 0262 54 89 40; www.lacazoceane.com ; 28 Chemin Mutel, Notre-Dame des Champs; s €30-40, d
€40-50, incl breakfast; ) Under new management since 2011, this snug B&B in the hamlet
of Notre-Dame des Champs offers good value for money. No one would accuse the four
rooms of being over-decorated but they are neat and spacious and guests can use a terrace
with million-dollar views - perfect for an apéro (apéritif) after a bout of sightseeing. The
owners can cook some reputedly good evening meals (€20). Excellent breakfast too, with
homemade bread and jam. English is spoken.

Les Lataniers
( 0692 25 13 38, 0262 34 74 45; leslataniers.free.fr; 136ter Rue Adrien Lagourgue, Piton St-Leu; d €65-70;
) An excellent surprise, with tasteful decor, a fantastic garden with panoramic views
and a stunning pool looking straight out to the sea. The four apartments are huge, well ap-
pointed and sun-filled. It's an ideal base for hikers as the female owner is a keen walker
with lots of route information on the island. Find Les Lataniers on the southern fringes of
Piton St-Leu, towards Les Avirons.
Le Balcon Créole - Chez
François et Michèle Huet
( 0692 67 62 54, 0262 54 76 70; www.gitehuet-reunion.fr ; 202 Chemin Potier, Les Colimaçons; d incl breakfast
€50-58; ) The four rooms here are sparkling, fresh and colourful, but only two rooms
come with a sea view. Ask for the spacious Creole-style gîte in the flower-filled garden if
you intend to stay more than three nights. When it comes to preparing fish dishes, the
Huets know their stuff. It's signposted, uphill from the botanical garden.

Bardzour - Chez Marie-Claire Vion
( 0262 34 13 97; www.bardzour.com ; 87 Chemin des Serres, Piton St-Leu; d incl breakfast €50-65;
) This is a lovely option if you're looking for a secluded, rural atmosphere, though it cops
some noise from the Route des Tamarins below. The three well-equipped rooms and the
cute Case Planteur set among orchards provide a very cushy landing after a hard day's
driving. Table d'hôte (€23) meals are available twice a week. The pool is an added bonus.
To find it, take the D11 towards Stella Matutina and Piton St-Leu.
