In-Depth Information
St-Gilles is well endowed with eating places. Standards tend to be more variable than
elsewhere on the island.
As well as restaurants, you'll find several
camions-pizzas
(mobile pizza vans) on the
main street; they're a good bargain. They operate in the evening.
Chez Loulou
( 0262 24 40 41; 86 Rue du Général de Gaulle; mains €6-8; 7am-1pm & 3-7pm Mon-Sat, 7am-1pm Sun)
The
most iconic Creole
case
(house) for miles around, with a distinctive turquoise facade on
the main drag. The belt-bustingly good samosas,
macatias
(a variety of bun), croissants
and tarts continue to torment us! Good sandwiches and takeaway meals at lunchtime, too.

ICE CREAM

( 0262 24 53 06; 13 Rue de la Poste; ice creams from €1.80; 11am-7pm Tue-Sun, to 11pm Sat)
You'll lose
all self-control at this drool-inducing ice-cream parlour. Amid a mind-boggling array of
flavours, the electric purple pitaya screams 'try me'. Good pancakes and waffles, too.
La Case à Pain
( 0262 33 27 89; Port de Plaisance; sandwiches €4.50; 6.30am-7pm)
Hmm! We can still smell the
scent of freshly baked bread and cakes wafting from the door. It also churns out excellent
sandwiches.

Le P'tit Zinc
( 0262 24 07 50; 58 Rue du Général de Gaulle; mains €14-20, menu €19; dinner Mon-Sat)
This venue has
a tantalising menu showcasing all the classics of Creole cuisine, served in snug surrounds
complete with wood beams, elegant furnishings and tropical plants. Feeling adventurous?
Go for the
carri pat' cochon
(pig's trotter curry). The spiffing balcony on the 1st floor
(two tables only) is a good place to linger over a meal.
