In the modern Port de Plaisance complex, the quite engaging Aquarium de la Réunion
houses a series of excellent underwater displays, including tanks with lobsters, barracu-
das, groupers and small sharks.
Beaches
Plage des Roches Noires , in the heart of town, is crowded and neatly striped with sunbeds and
parasols, but, beneath all this, it remains an attractive stretch of beach excellent for famil-
ies, with shallow waters and plenty of restaurants. One section is dedicated to surfers. On
the southern side of the Port de Plaisance, Plage des Brisants is less ideal for swimming but is
surprisingly more quiet.
Activities
Boat Excursions & Whale-Watching
The best way to discover St-Gilles' iridescent lagoon is by joining a boat excursion. Vari-
ous operators offer promenades en mer (boat excursions) and observation sous-marine
(glass-bottomed tours) along the coast towards St-Leu or St-Paul. 'Safaris dauphin' (dol-
phin encounters), whale-watching trips (from June to September or October), sunset
cruises and day-long catamaran cruises are also available. Tours go every day but are
weather-dependent.
