Distinctly unimpressive for the price, the Austral is not quite the three-star heavyweight it
thinks it is, but the rooms have the requisite comforts, location is tip-top, facilities are
good and there's a small pool. If you plan to stay here, aim high - the rooms and views get
better the higher you go. Angle for rooms 302 or 308, which have sea views.

( 0262 20 91 20; www.hotel-jdodu.com ; 31 Rue Juliette Dodu; s €110-165, d €160-190, ste €215-250, incl break-
fast; ) Live like a colonial administrator in this stylish Creole building dating
from the early 19th century. Although the cheaper rooms feel claustrophobic and are un-
extraordinary, there are still enough vintage touches in the reception area - period furnish-
ings, plump armchairs and old-fashioned tiles - to satisfy the snob within, with the added
lure of a pool and a cosy restaurant. It's a two-minute strut south of the Barachois.

Mercure Créolia
( 0262 94 26 26; www.accor.com ; 14 Rue du Stade, Montgaillard; d €120-215; ) Located
some 4km south of the city centre in a tranquil neighbourhood, your efforts in getting here
are rewarded with splendid views over the coast. Rooms are functional and unflashy, and
the decor is nothing special, but the setting and the relaxed feel more than make up for the
slightly dated sense of style. Note that the cheaper rooms don't have sea views. Amenities
include a bar, a restaurant and a gym. Best asset is the pool, one of the biggest in Réunion.

Villa Angélique

BOUTIQUE HOTEL €€€
( www.villa-angelique.fr ; 39 Rue de Paris; s €145-175, d €185-205, ste €220-250, incl breakfast; ) The
closest thing St-Denis has to a boutique hotel, the Villa Angélique occupies a nicely ren-
ovated historic building and is just oozing with atmosphere. It's a modern twist on coloni-
al decor: there are polished wood floors, beautiful wooden furniture, rich fabrics, spark-
ling bathrooms and beds that seem custom designed to give sweet dreams. On the down-
side, the on-site restaurant is overpriced and there's no private parking.
