(Petit Butte; mains from Rs 160; 11am-2pm & 6-9pm) If you're visiting Caverne Patate ( Click here )
or the François Leguat Reserve ( Click here ) , you could do worse than stop by this quiet
little local place above a small grocery store. The octopus dishes are particularly memor-

Mengoz Snack
OFFLINE MAP
(Route de l'Autonomie, Mont Lubin; mains Rs 45-120; 8am-4pm Mon-Sat) It doesn't get much simpler
than this but that's why we like it. Next to where the main road through the island
branches to Grande Montagne, Port Mathurin and the southwest, this fine little snack bar
serves up fried rice or noodles, often with a main dish such as chop suey, and packs them
in at lunchtime. A real slice of local life.
STREET FOOD
Mazavaroo
OFFLINE MAP
( 716 2282; St François; mains around Rs 300; 10am-3pm & 6-9pm Sun-Fri) Hikers tackling a scenic
east-coast jaunt can take a lunch break at this very casual affair. Savour the home-cooked
seafood (smoked marlin, grilled fish, prawns and lobster), while the house specialty is
ceviché de thon jaune , which is kind of like a yellow-fin tuna tartar, all served on painted
pastel tables. Expats swear by this place.
