ACCOMMODATION
By sheer volume alone, Mauritius offers the greatest range of sleeping options among the
islands in the area. There are three main types of accommodation: fully equipped vacation
rentals, locally run guesthouses, and larger hotels and resorts.
PRACTICALITIES
» Electricity 220V, 50Hz; both British-style three-pin sockets and continental two-pin variety are commonly used.
» Newspapers French-language L'Express ( www.lexpress.mu ) and Le Mauricien ( www.lemauricien.com ); News
on Sunday and the Mauritius Times are English-language weeklies.
» Radio Huge number of local commercial stations broadcasting in Creole and Hindi, and the BBC World Service
and Voice of America readily available. Most popular include Kool FM 89.3 Mhz and Taal FM 94.0 Mhz.
» Television Three free television channels run by the state Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) - MBC1,
MBC2 and MBC3 - and numerous pay channels. Programming is mainly in Creole but with foreign imports in
French, English and Indian languages.
» Weights and measures Mauritius uses the metric system.
Seasons
In general, high season runs from around October to March, with a focus on the European
winter months. Prices soar at the end of December and beginning of January. From May to
September travellers can expect prices to dip during the low-season months, often called
'green season'.
