Symon's Restaurant

SEAFOOD, MAURITIAN €€
( 415 1135; Belle Mare; mains Rs 350-800; 11am-10pm) The best option in Belle Mare beyond
the all-star line-up of in-house hotel restaurants, Symon's serves up a variety of Indian,
Mauritian and Chinese dishes. The views are ho-hum, but at least you won't break the
bank and some dishes - such as octopus curry with coconut milk, or the grilled catch of
the day - are outstanding.
Rasoi
OFFLINE MAP
( 401 1888; Le Saint Géran, Pointe de Flacq; mains Rs 950-2400; 12.30-3.30pm & 7-10pm) Rasoi is the
brainchild of Vineet Bhatia, a Michelin-star chef who made a name for himself in the
London restaurant scene. The dining area is situated on an open-air verandah made of slat-
ted jungle trunks tucked under an awning of thatch. While appreciating the views of the
lagoon, cane-draped hills and a Taj Mahal-like temple, guests savour a dynamic assort-
ment of Indian-inspired dishes. The lunch menu features a more casual selection of naan
wraps and seafood samplers (the salmon is breathtaking); dinner is decidedly more soph-
isticated; the highlight is the curry leaf and ginger-infused lobster tail. Reservations re-
quired.

Even quieter and more rugged than the sandy streamers of Belle Mare, this calm area bor-
dering the island's north still has a distinctive Creole vibe and is generally unmarred by
upmarket developers. Holidaymakers seeking tranquillity should look no further than the
lovely selection of private villas dotting the stone-strewn coast.
