'women's empowerment' grant from the Mauritian government, friendly Maryse and her
family opened a small restaurant in her backyard. Savoury Creole eats are stewed under
her yellow tin roof and served to contented customers gathered around the haphazard col-
lection of tables. The restaurant is across the street from L'Oiseau du Paradis.

Blue Bamboo
has many charms: a cosy plant-filled cloister, delicious pan pizza, friendly owners and an
inviting lounge on the 2nd floor. The upstairs bar is open every day, except Monday, from
6pm to midnight. In high season it's best to call ahead if you're eyeing a table in the
bamboo-lined courtyard.
