'women's empowerment' grant from the Mauritian government, friendly Maryse and her
family opened a small restaurant in her backyard. Savoury Creole eats are stewed under
her yellow tin roof and served to contented customers gathered around the haphazard col-
lection of tables. The restaurant is across the street from L'Oiseau du Paradis.
Blue Bamboo

has many charms: a cosy plant-filled cloister, delicious pan pizza, friendly owners and an

bamboo-lined courtyard.
