You won't come across any grand hotels in quaint Mahébourg, but you will find a prolif-
eration of good, simple guesthouses, making the town an ideal base for budget travellers.
Staying in Pointe d'Esny further down the coast is a good, quieter alternative.

Rue de Labourdonnais; r from Rs 700, with shared bathroom Rs 500;

As the name suggests, this simple guesthouse has nice rooms - if simple and a bit
faded - tended by a lovely Indian couple. For this price it's the best in town.

incl breakfast Rs 1100/1400; )
Seemingly always under construction, Hotel les Aigrettes
feels a bit like a Jenga tower with its stack of bedrooms and protruding balconies winding
several storeys high. The rooms are clean (some even have sea views) with our pick
Room 32 - the bathroom may be across the hall (although it's not shared) but the combin-
ation of views and comfort are splendid. The owner has a big smile.
Tyvabro

; Rue Marianne; r incl breakfast Rs 1000; )
This family-run opera-
tion earns high marks for friendly and eager service. Little perks like in-room DVD play-
ers and a welcoming roof deck with a hammock more than make up for the past-their-
prime furnishings in the rooms.

Simple, light-
filled spaces right by the water are what this place is all about but clean rooms are the or-
