In-Depth Information
( 451 5115; Royal Rd; mains Rs 250-400; lunch & dinner) Bedecked with a pastoral latticework
of flowering twigs and bamboo branches, Sirokan (a bastardisation of sirop de cane or
'sugar cane') is our favourite La Gaulette dining spot despite its unassuming position
along the main road at the far north end of town. You'll have your choice of perfectly pre-
pared steak or seafood. Try either one, or both - you really can't go wrong. The owners of
Sirokan also run Domaine du Cachet ( Click here ) in Chamarel.

PIZZA €€
( 451 5910; Royal Rd; pizza Rs 300-470; 5-10pm Wed-Mon) Good pizzas and something of a
surfer's vibe with DVDs and a Saturday evening happy hour. It all falls a bit flat when
things are quiet but that changes when a crowd's in.

Styling itself as a lounge bar and restaurant, this place does cool very well, with its laid-
back pool table and Saturday night DJs. The food itself is good without being spectacular
- think pizzas, pasta and seafood.
Getting There & Around
Buses (every 20 minutes) between Quatre Bornes and Baie du Cap stop in La Gaulette.
There are no direct buses from Port Louis. Instead you have to go via Quatre Bornes, or
take the bus from Port Louis to Black River and change.
A taxi between Port Louis and La Gaulette will cost around Rs 1100; it's Rs 1700 to the
airport. Do not take a taxi to Chamarel - rent a vehicle instead.

Le Morne Peninsula
Visible from much of southwestern Mauritius, the iconic Le Morne Brabant (556m) is a
stunning rock crag from which this beautiful peninsula takes its name. Shaped like a ham-
merhead shark, the peninsula itself has some of the island's best beaches, now home to a
number of upmarket hotels.
