villa in his name! Insist on a sea view and you'll be treated to some of the most spectacu-
lar vistas on the island. Almost all of Ropsen's properties have wi-fi, and guests without a

Set among imposing homes on a res-
idential street away from the sea, this stately
chambre d'hôte
is a real find. Although the
whitewashed facade, gabled roofs and periwinkle shutters may hint at a colonial past, the
building is only a few years old. The owners designed their retirement getaway to invoke
the island's plantation past and they keep tradition alive every evening with their Creole-
inspired
table d'hôte
dinners (€15) served on the shaded verandah. There's a minimum
four-night-stay policy.

This fabulous place at the northern end of town
is a fine addition to La Gaulette's array of sleeping options. The rooms are flooded with
natural light and have excellent bathrooms. They also give you a mobile to use for the
duration of your visit (you just pay for calls) and they love helping you plan your stay.

The small
superettes
(small self-service grocery stores) that line the main street through
town cater for the legions of self-caterers; there are only a few restaurants in the area. For
more options consider driving up to Chamarel or Black River.
