Set directly along the sea and surrounded by a wild tropical garden, this quiet option
features an L-shaped row of double-decker apartments. Rooms are breezy and simple,
with cream-coloured walls, scarlet drapes and rounded balconies promising memorable
sunset views. This is one of few hotels in Mauritius that openly advertises its gay-friendly
credentials.

should be an entry in all film location scouts' Rolodexes, 'cause no one does '70s retro
quite like the Tamarin Hotel. Believe it or not the throwback colour scheme was a con-
scious choice during the renovation in 2002 - you'll either adore it or abhor it so it's best
to click through a few pictures on the website before committing. Even if you don't decide
to stay here it's well worth swinging by to take in the chilled-out atmosphere. There's a
great pool, a sociable stretch of sand out front and a welcoming restaurant that usually
hums with live beats. Watersports enthusiasts should ask at the front desk about surfing
lessons.

Eating
The townships of the Black River area have a respectable selection of dining choices. In
general, prices are quite high relative to the rest of the island as the target customers are
usually expat South Africans and wealthy Franco-Mauritians.
Those in search of street eats will usually find
boulette
(meatball) vendors at Tamarin
Beach (across from the eponymous hotel) on Saturday and Sunday between noon and
7.30pm. Locals say that these are among the best on the island.
