Activities
There are ample hiking opportunities at Black River Gorges National Park further inland
and Le Morne Peninsula to the south.
Dolphin-Watching
Tamarin Beach's heyday as a surf hub may have subsided, but now tourists are flocking to
the area to check out the friendly pods of bottlenose and spinner dolphins that swim by
each morning. Speedboats departing from all over the island circle the western waters of-
fering tourists a chance to jump in and swim with the gentle creatures.
The sudden increase in operators has called the sustainability of local dolphin-watching
into question. Choose your tour boat carefully - companies who do not have the dolphins'
wellbeing at heart should be avoided. Trips usually depart at 7am. Figure on around €40
for a two-hour excursion.
Check out www.mauritiuscatamaran.com for a short list of tour possibilities. La
Pirogue Big Game Fishing also offers trips. Note that some dolphin-watching trips include
a visit to Île aux Bénitiers.
JP Henry Charters Ltd
( 729 0901; www.blackriver-mauritius.com ) JP Henry Charters Ltd offers highly recommended
dolphin trips on either a catamaran or speedboat.
BOAT TOUR
Deep-Sea Fishing
The estuary at Black River suddenly plunges 700m down to the ocean floor making it one
of the island's deep-sea fishing hubs. The peak fishing season is between November and
March when you can catch just about anything from blue marlin to hammerheads. Black
marlin and barracuda can be caught throughout the year, while the yellowfin season is
from March to May and the wahoo season is around September to December.
There are a number of fishermen in the area that offer outings on fully equipped boats.
Many of them congregate at Le Morne Anglers' Club OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 483 5801;
www.morneanglers.com ; 6.30am-8.30pm) , signposted beside the crumbling police station. In ad-
dition to fishing outings, it also offers boat charters and catamaran cruises along the coast
for a spot of dolphin-watching, snorkelling and barbecue picnics.
