(Little Acorn; 453 5277; Royal Rd; s/d/apt Rs 700/1100/1300, s/d with shared bathroom Rs 650/800; ) Peep-
ing out from behind a rusty wrought-iron gate and overgrown foliage, this ramshackle
guesthouse is the first place you should look if you're serious about pinching pennies. The
rooms are basic - we'd say bare if it weren't for the coy mosaics on the wall - but
everything's clean and most of the bathroom fixtures are relatively new. If you can, go for
the apartment with a terrace on the 2nd floor (Room 8). The elderly Chinese owner is
friendly and the eclectic wrought-iron sculptures around the property were done by her
husband.

( 453 8557; easyworld@intnet.mu; Royal Rd; r/studio Rs 850/1100; ) Basic, cheap, though rather
threadbare, the Easy World Hotel is conveniently set along the main road through town -
ask for a room on one of the upper floors - it's quite a climb but the sea breezes should
compensate.

( 453 9000; www.aanari.com ; Royal Rd; s/d from €80/112; ) Perched atop the Pasadena
Village, Aanari is attempting boutique sophistication with a clutch of oriental statues and
special 'VIP perks' for guests at eminently reasonable midrange prices. Rooms feel dis-
tinctly Asian in theme with lacquered furnishings, errant flower petals and silk bed run-
ners. The hotel's biggest drawcard is the window-filled spa and fitness centre on the roof.
La Pirogue

( 403 3900; www.lapirogue.com ; r incl half board from €290; ) Mauritius' oldest resort
shares the same management as Sugar Beach next door, but there's a completely different
feel here. Rather than a colonial manse theme, La Pirogue opts for a charming fishing vil-
lage vibe with semicircular clusters of adorable hut-villas arranged along the 500m of
spectacular sandy beach. The resort was built around the same time as the Sydney Opera
House and if you look carefully you'll notice that the thatch roofing is arranged in a simil-
ar fashion to the trademark cavalier helmet-like roofing on the iconic opera house. To
