WORTH A TRIP
CHATEAU LABOURDONNAIS
If you've rented a taxi for the day to explore the botanical gardens and sugar museum at Pamplemousses, there's
one more stop in the area that we highly recommend.
One of the loveliest examples of colonial architecture on the island, recently restored Chateau Labourdonnais
OFFLINE MAP ( 266 9533; www.unchateaudanslanature.com; Mapou; adult/child Rs 175/80, meals Rs
1100; 9am-5pm) was completed in 1859. Built in teak and sporting an Italian neoclassical style, the chateau
is perfectly proportioned and filled with sober Victorian furnishings interspersed with some exceptionally lovely
design flourishes. Compulsory guided tours last for 45 minutes. After the tour, wander through the lush gardens,
taste the rum from the on-site distillery and stay for a meal at the restaurant where the menu changes daily.
To get here, head north along the M2 motorway for around 3km then take the exit for Mapou, then follow the
signs.
