In-Depth Information
To reach this area from the airport, change buses in Port Louis. Alternatively, a taxi
costs Rs 800 from Port Louis to Balaclava, Rs 900 to Grand Baie and Rs 1000 to Grand
Gaube. Add an additional Rs 1000 to reach the airport.
Most hotels and guesthouses have bikes for hire and can help organise car hire. Other-
wise, you can approach the rental agencies directly. The largest concentration is in Grand
Baie, and there are a smattering of outlets in and around Trou aux Biches and Pereybère.

TOP OF CHAPTER
Port Louis to Grand Baie
The northwest coast of Mauritius is quiet and quietly pretty with some good beaches, ex-
cellent hotels and a more tranquil air than Port Louis and Grand Baie at either end.
Balaclava , around 10km north of Port Louis, is named after the region's black-lava rocks.
The narrow road passes through tiny Pointe aux Piments en route to relaxed Trou aux Biches and
the neighbouring village of Mont Choisy (also spelt Mon Choisy). Trou aux Biches (Does'
Watering Hole) in particular enjoys gorgeous stretches of casuarina-lined sand that contin-
ue almost unbroken all the way to sleepy Mont Choisy. Although things are changing,
most of the beaches are pleasantly uncrowded during the week, but there's fierce competi-
tion for picnic spots on weekends.
