First Restaurant
( 212 0685; cnr Royal & Coderie Sts; mains from Rs 175; noon-3pm & 6.30-9.30pm Tue-Sun)
If the age-
old rule that a good Chinese restaurant is full of Chinese diners applies, then First is a
winner. Packed with large family groups enjoying vast feasts of delicious Cantonese cook-
ing, this is one of Chinatown's finest and prices are extremely reasonable for the quality
of the fare.

Lambic
( 212 6011; 4 St Georges St; mains Rs 260-530; 8am-10pm Mon-Thu, 8am-late Fri, 11am-10pm Sat)
Set in a
refurbished colonial home in the heart of the capital's chaos, Lambic is a beer buff's para-
dise with dozens upon dozens of local and imported beers, with a particularly rich selec-
tion from Belgium. If the dark-wood bar, antique timber beams and fanned napkins don't
win you over, then you'll surely be impressed by the glass-faced pantries covering all the
interior walls - they reveal hundreds upon hundreds of alcoholic imports. Waiters are well
versed in the high art of matching platters to pints (yes, that's right - you match your meal
to
your beer here). The food includes all the usual fish and meat offerings, with some un-
usual local dishes such as Creole wild hare.

There's something rather Parisian about the bustle and brasserie-style
ambience here, and its especially popular for a coffee or lunch for business meetings dur-
ing the week. Dishes include Rodrigues-style pork curry or fish in ginger, but they won't
look askance at you if you just order coffee and croissant.
