Ruse's largest winery, Vinprom Rousse has modernised admirably since its 1998
privatisation. Among its best offerings are quality, Danubian Valley whites. It's especially
known for the light local red, Gamza, but also produces Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc,
Igni Blanc and Welschriesling, among others.

In Suhindol
village near Veliko Târnovo, this winery dating to 1909 produces over 6 million litres of
wine and brandy annually. It specialises in the deep purple, slightly spicy Gamza (best
after two or three years of ageing), Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Muscat.
Eastern (Black Sea Coastal)
Running down the Black Sea coast from Romania to Turkey, this region features over half
of Bulgaria's white grape varietals, with long summers and mild autumns creating ideal
conditions for them. About 30% of Bulgaria's vineyards are here, in Targovishte, Preslav
and Strandja. Dimyat, Traminer, Riesling, Muscat Ottonel, Sauvignon Blanc and
Gewürztraminer are excellent local wines.

Chateau Euxinograde
( 052-393 165; Varna) Housed in the former royal palace north
of Varna, this winery was established in 1891 by Prince Battenberg, then catered to the
communist elite from 1944 to 1989. The 90-hectare Euxinograde complex includes a
palace featuring elaborate period furnishings, botanical gardens with rare plants, and the
wine collections of Prince Ferdinand and Tsar Boris III, which includes a Chateau Mar-
gaux from 1904. The winery's delicate Riesling and rich Traminer white are particularly
good, as is its French-style brandy, Euxignac.

The Targovishte microregion, near
Veliko Târnovo, has produced many prizewin-
ning wines of late. LVK-Vinprom is the largest - visit the winery and its vineyards at
nearby Kralevo. Targovishte wines, both red and white, make good dinner wines.
