2-5pm Mon-Fri) The unique Transportation Museum exhibits vintage locomotives from
the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as carriages that once belonged to Tsar Boris
III, Tsar Ferdinand and Turkish sultan Abdul Aziz.

(ul Tsar Ferdinand 36; adult/student 4/1 lv; 9am-noon & 12.30-5.30pm) Built in 1866,
this townhouse features some recreated period rooms, with 19th-century furniture, paint-
ings and chandeliers upstairs. Downstairs there are changing exhibitions on social themes
such as education, childhood and domestic life.

Pantheon of the National Revival

(Park na Vazrozhdentsite; adult/student 2/1 lv; 9am-noon & 12.30-5.30pm) The gold-
domed Pantheon of the National Revival was built in 1978 to commemorate the 100th an-
niversary of the deaths of 453 local heroes who fought the Ottomans in the Russo-Turkish
War. Inside you can see the marble tombs of revolutionary leaders and a small collection
of swords and rifles, but nothing is explained in English.

Profit-Yielding Building

(pl Svoboda) This huge, gloriously titled neo-baroque building dominates the western end
of pl Svoboda. Built between 1898 and 1902 by Viennese architects, it was intended as a
home for the Dramatic Theatre (which is still here) and several shops. The rents from
these were used to fund local schools, hence the name. These days it also houses a few
restaurants.
