In-Depth Information
CENTRAL COAST
Pomorie
0596 / POP 13,500
Like neighbouring Nesebâr, Pomorie sits on a narrow peninsula, and until it was ravaged
by fire in 1906 it was almost as picturesque. There, however, the similarities end. The mod-
ern town centre has a lazy charm, and there's a serviceable though unspectacular beach.
Known for its salt lakes and therapeutic mud treatments, Pomorie is very much a Bulgarian
resort and is almost entirely bypassed by foreign tourists.
Sights & Activities
There are a few churches worth a look, including the Preobrazhenie Gospodne Church ,
dating from 1765.
It's often windy at the beach, making it ideal for windsurfing . Mud baths, hydrotherapy
and countless other treatments are available at many hotels.
MONASTERY
Sveti Georgi Monastery
(ul Knyaz Boris I) On a dusty road about 2km out of town, heading towards the main bus
station, is Sveti Georgi Monastery. Built in 1856, it's a small complex set in pretty gardens
with a quaint, icon-filled church and a bell tower covered in saintly frescoes. It's also pos-
sible to stay here.
Sleeping & Eating
Pensioners holding cardboard signs gather near the main bus station and further along ul
Knyaz Boris I, offering private rooms from around 10 lv per person, and many houses on
this road have accommodation signs for svobodni stai in their windows.
The beachfront promenade, ul Kraybrezhna, is lined with restaurants, while better op-
tions (with multilingual menus) are found near the Preobrazhenie Gospodne Church, in-
cluding Restaurant Tsarevets (ul Knyaz Boris I; mains 4-10 lv) , which offers grilled pork,
chicken and fish dishes.
