History
Greek colonists from Apollonia (modern-day Sozopol) expanded their territory into the
Burgas region as far back as the 6th century BC. Later, the Romans came along and Em-
peror Vespasian founded a city here, named Deultum, in the 1st century AD. The name
Burgas first appeared on maps in the 17th century, when fisher folk from the wider region
settled here. The city grew quickly after the completion of the railway from Plovdiv
