During much of the 20th century, until as recently as a few years ago, the area had become
a slum, a poor excuse for public housing for impoverished Roma.
These days, the saddle-makers are long gone and the Roma are quickly being pushed
out to make way for arguably the liveliest, hippest, bawdiest and loudest quarter in the en-
tire country.
