trance, spacious interior, stylish furniture and brightly coloured walls. See also the Kableshkov House (ul Todor
Kableshkov 8; closed Mon) , built by the famous revolutionary who (probably) fired the 1876 April Uprising's
first shot. His former home (1845) has exhibits about the revolt.
Each 1 May, costumed locals perform the Re-enactment of the April 1876 Uprising, In mid-August, the Folklore
Days Festival features traditional music and dance.
Except for during such events, accommodation's plentiful. The squarefront Tourist Information Centre
( www.koprivshtitsa.inf o ; pl 20 April; 10am-1pm & 2-7pm) arranges rooms from 25 lv per person in summer (it
can also organise local tours). Hotel Trayanov Kâshta is arguably Koprivshtitsa's most atmospheric guesthouse,
with traditionally furnished, colourful rooms inside an enclosed courtyard with garden, and relaxing upstairs bal-
cony for an evening drink. Also, the Bonchova House ( 2614; ul Tumangelova Cheta 26; d/apt 30/50 lv) , close
to the Kalachev Bridge, offers two bright, modern rooms and an apartment; the relaxing common room features a
working fireplace. (Breakfast 5 lv extra.)
Traditional fare is served at Dyado Liben ( 2109; ul Hadzhi Nencho Palaveev 47; mains 4-9 lv; 11am-
midnight; ) , an atmospheric 1852 mansion with tables set in a warren of halls, graced with ornate painted walls
and heavy, worn wood floors. Find it just across the bridge leading from the main square inside the facing courtyard.
The village's helpful and friendly Tourist Information Centre, located in a small maroon building on the main
square, provides local information and can organise private accommodation. There's ATM machines and a post of-
fice/telephone centre inside the village centre.
Getting to Koprivshtitsa is a bit of a challege. Being 9km north of the village, the train station requires a shuttle
bus (2 lv, 15 minutes), which isn't always dependably timed for meeting incoming and outgoing trains. Trains do
come from Sofia (11 lv, 2½ hours, four daily) and connections can be made for Plovdiv and other points, like Bur-
gas, which gets a daily train (18 lv, five hours). Alternatively, Koprivshtitsa's bus stop is central and has more fre-
quent connections including five daily buses to Sofia (13 llv, two hours), and one daily to Plovdiv (12 lv, two
hours).
Hisar
0337 / POP 7691
Therapeutic mineral springs have been Hisar's (also known as Hisarya) main claim to
fame ever since Roman times, when it was named Diokletianopolis, after the Emperor
Diocletian. The 22 mineral-water springs here are said to cure many ailments, and the
popularity of these springs even today has ensured this sleepy mountain town's livelihood.
The main street has some unique ruins from the days of ancient Rome, though the major
reason to visit today, as then, is for the indolent spa therapy.
There's an ATM on the corner of the central ul Hristo Botev.
