Hotel Strannopriemnitsa $
( 801 831; s/d incl breakfast 36/60 lv) At the northern (Gabrovo) end of the market com-
plex, this hotel is decent value, though singles are tiny. The doubles have balconies with
views (of the less interesting part of the complex).
HOTEL
Hotel Perla $
( 801 984; d 45 lv) This friendly place offers the best value around, with spacious rooms
that boast shiny bathrooms and balconies. Breakfast is 5 lv extra.

Eating
Restaurant Strannopriemnitsa $$
(mains 6-11 lv) Part of the Hotel Strannopriemnitsa, this hunting-lodge-style mehana (re-
plete with wall-mounted deer antlers) has better decor than food. The service is good,
however, and the outdoor tables overlook the grass and trees.
BULGARIAN
Renaissance Tavern $$
(mains 8-10 lv) With an atmospherically touristy location within the market complex, the
Renaissance has reasonably good Bulgarian fare. The complex's little bakery sells
takeaway food, such as glazed simit buns (a local speciality) and cheese pies, while the
sladkarnitsa (sweet shop) offers a tempting and very colourful range of traditional sweets,
including lokum (Turkish delight) and halvas.

Getting There & Away
Etâr is best served from the nondescript town of Gabrovo, which has local buses for the
15-minute trip. Alternatively, any Gabrovo-Kazanlâk bus will leave you at the turn-off,
from where it's a 2km-walk. A taxi from Gabrovo costs about 8 lv. From Etâr, a taxi to
Tryavna (about 25 lv) saves the trouble of bussing via Gabrovo.
If driving, Etâr makes a good day trip from Veliko Târnovo, Arbanasi, Trayvna or Dry-
anovo.
