located on a side street near the post office. Facilities include a rooftop pool, sauna, spa
treatments and (they claim) Bulgaria's biggest Jacuzzi. Spa treatments veer more towards
cosmetics.

Veliko Târnovo has excellent restaurants and cafes for all budgets; for atmosphere, try
those with terraces overlooking the river and gorge, or some up in Varosha.

doubt Veliko Târnovo's finest restaurant, Han Hadji Nikoli occupies a beautifully restored
1858 building with an upstairs art gallery. Winner of Bulgaria's 'building of the year' in
2010, this former inn, crafted by National Revival architect Kolyo Ficheto, resembles a
Venetian mansion with its curving arches, secluded courtyard and refined halls - architec-
ture befitting its excellent international fare.
