North of the horseman, a 373-step rock stairway leads to the 130m-high clifftop and the
ruined Madara Fortress, built during the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185-1396). There
are sweeping views from above.

Getting There & Away
Public transport to Madara's limited, and the horseman is 3km up a steep road from the
village. Several daily Shumen-Varna trains stop at Madara, but Shumen-Madara buses
are infrequent; better to catch the bus from Shumen to Kaspichan (five daily), and then a
minibus to Madara from there. A taxi from Shumen costs 30 lv return, including waiting
time. Madara has no taxis.
