Eating
Melnik's best eats are at hotel or pension restaurants, though other worthy spots abound.
Aside from the local wine, try the traditional banitsa (a flaky cheese pasty), a local speci-
ality, and the mountain river trout.

Mehana Mencheva Kâshta $
( 339; mains 6-11 lv; 10am-11.30pm) This tiny tavern has an atmospheric upper
porch overlooking the main street down towards the end of the village. It's popular with
locals and does the full run of Bulgarian dishes - sometimes venison, wild boar and local
snails are available.
Chinarite Restaurant $$
( 0887992191; mains 5-8 lv; ) Midway up the main road, by the bridge, Chinarite
serves Bulgarian dishes and homemade Melnik banitsa . It also has a small wine cellar for
tasting.

( 283; mains 5-8 lv) Loznitsite Tavern has an inviting, vine-covered outdoor setting,
and good Bulgarian fare.

Melnik is hassle-free and new services have made it a more convenient base. Wi-fi is now
available at most hotels, and there's a new ATM by the Hotel Bulgari, past the central
square, where the post office and phone centre stands.
Melnik Tourist Information Center ( 0884282705; gradmelniktic@abv.bg; obshtina
building; 9am-5pm) Located behind the bus stop, on the obshtina (municipality) build-
ing's upper floor, this friendly centre advises on accommodation and local activities, in-
cluding hikes and visiting Rozhen Monastery.
