MONASTERIES
Bucovina's painted monasteries, all from the 15th and 16th centuries, are considered mas-
terpieces for the way they harmonise colour and architectural style with the surrounding
countryside.
HISTORY
Moldavia was the scene of some of the greatest military triumphs against the Ottoman
Turks in the 15th century, carried out by Moldavian prince Stephen the Great (Ştefan cel
Mare).
FOOD
Moldavia is renowned for some of the best regional traditional cooking. They lay claim to
mămăligă
(cornmeal mush) here, but we're partial to
ciorbă Rădăuţi
, chicken soup with
mashed garlic and vinegar, doused with sour cream.
