(pl Sveta Nedelya; Serdika) Completed in 1863, this magnificent domed church is one
of the city's major landmarks, noted for its rich, Byzantine-style murals. It was blown up
by communists on 16 April 1925 in an attempt to assassinate Tsar Boris III. Over 120
people were killed in the attack, including most of the cabinet, but Boris escaped un-
harmed.

SOFIA IN…
One Day
Head straight to Sofia's most impressive sight, the Aleksander Nevski Memorial Church ( Click here ) . While
you're there, visit the Aleksander Nevski Crypt to see the Museum of Icons. Go along to the nearby Royal Palace,
and take a look over the paintings and sculptures in the National Art Gallery ( Click here ) . In the evening, drop
by Pri Kmeta ( Click here ) for a beer or two.
Three Days
Follow the above itinerary, and on the second day admire the treasures on show at the Archaeological Museum (
Click here ) and take the opportunity to watch the changing of the guard at the neighbouring President's Building
( Click here ) . On the next day, take a relaxing stroll around Borisova Gradina ( Click here ) and have dinner at the
excellent Manastirska Magernitsa ( Click here ) .
One Week
After the above itinerary, go to Boyana to see the National Museum of History ( Click here ) and the lovely Boy-
ana Church ( Click here ). Take a look round the Museum of Socialist Art ( Click here ) and take a day trip out to
Koprivshtitsa.
