Plovdiv's elegant old town is an impeccable host for some of the Balkans' top art galler-
ies. The best Bulgarian painters, including contemporary artists, are on display; free city-
wide exhibitions each September are prominent events on the cultural calendar.
SKIING
The Rila, Pirin and Rodopi Mountains sprawl across southern Bulgaria and offer the coun-
try's best skiing. Bansko offers unexplored terrain for off-piste adventures and raucous
après-ski partying; smaller places like Chepelare are family-friendly, with idyllic cross-
country trails.
