Accommodation
Romania has a wide choice of accommodation options to suit most budgets, including ho-
tels, pensions and private rooms, hostels and camping grounds. Prices across these categor-
ies have risen in recent years, but are still generally lower than comparable facilities in
Western Europe.
This topic divides accommodation options into three categories based on price: budget,
midrange and top end (see boxed text, opposite page). Budget properties normally include
hostels, camping grounds and some cheaper guesthouses. Midrange accommodation in-
cludes three-star hotels, pensions and better guesthouses. Top end usually means four- and
five-star hotels, corporate chains and high-end boutiques.
»Bucharest is the most expensive place to stay, followed by other large cities. The further
away from the cities you go, the cheaper the accommodation gets.
»Watch for seasonal fluctuations on rates. Summer resorts, particularly on the Black Sea,
have much higher prices in July and August.
»We've quoted prices in this guide in lei, though many hotels quote rates in euro. Regard-
less of the quote, you'll still have to pay in lei and your credit card will be debited in lei at
the current exchange rate.

Hotels
Romanian hotels are rated according to a 'star' system, which provides a rough approxima-
tion of what you can expect - though stars are awarded according to a property's facilities
and not on intangibles like appearance, location and value.
