Geamia Hunchiar Mosque

(B-dul Tomis 39; not open to the public) The city's second most important mosque
was built 1868 in Moorish style. Though it's not often open, if you get a chance, look in-
side to see an interior that remains little changed from the original design.

(Str Petru Rareş 2) Constanţa's once-glorious 19th-century synagogue is little more than a
ruin these days, guarded by some mean dogs. Still, you can walk past the front to get a
sense of the former majesty and significance of the place. Plans to restore the building
have been put on indefinite hold due to funding problems.

(Muzeul de Artă; 0241-617 012; B-dul Tomis 82-84; adult/child 10/5 lei; 9am-7pm
Mon-Fri) This airy museum in an atrium is heavy on 19th-century realism and landscapes,
including those by Nicolae Grigorescu, whose pointillist and Impressionist paintings anti-
cipated more modern movements. Our favourite has to be his Study of a Cow. The upper
level is given over to the dark abstract modernist Ion Alin Gheorghiu.

(Muzeul Marinei Române; 0241-619 035; Str Traian 53; adult/child 10/5 lei;
9am-5pm Wed-Sun) Fascinating if slightly confusing stroll through 2000 years of mari-
time history on the Black Sea. The exhibit begins in the Greco-Roman period, with some
intricate models of old Roman boats, but quickly moves to the 19th and 20th centuries.
The garden is strewn with relics of real propellers, landmines and torpedoes that seem to
be rusting into the ground.
