Bar Terasa
(Str Principala/Str I; 7am-3am May-Sep; ) When it comes to evening drinking, this
centrally located open-air terrace is the only game in town. Serves beer and coffee
throughout the day to a pulsating pop soundtrack that changes over to live music around
9pm.

There's a handy ATM (Str Principala, Complex Comercial; 9am-5pm Mon-Fri) in the
centre of the village.
Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Authority ( 0240-518 926; www.ddbra.ro ; Str I-a
39; permits day/week 5/15 lei; 7am-noon & 4-7pm Tue-Fri, 9am-1pm Sat & Sun May-
Oct) Decent source for what to see and do on the delta. Sells visitors permits. Located on
the harbour, about 50m from the entrance to the passenger ferry port.
Getting There & Away
There's regular ferry and hydrofoil service between Tulcea and Sfântu Gheorghe. The
ferry port is 100m south of the centre of the village. You can get here by road from
Sulina (30km), but there is no commercial minibus service. You'll have to hire a taxi
(about 250 lei for up to four people). It's also possible to travel by water taxi. Negotiate
rates on the waterfront. Expect to pay upwards of 400 to 500 lei for the three-hour jour-
ney.

Histria, or Istros, settled in 657 BC by Greek traders, is Romania's oldest town. Its founding by Greek colonists,
through the Hellenic decline, the rise and fall of the Roman Empire and then the rise of Byzantium, forms a fascin-
ating microcosm of early settlement in this part of the world.
