Rarău Massif
This Eastern Carpathian massif is snow-free from May to October. You can drive from
Câmpulung Moldovenesc to its base station shelter

. Rooms here have comfy beds and
basic bathrooms or shower. A small restaurant and provisions shop are nearby.
Entering Câmpulung Moldovenesc from the east, a left-hand road points to 'Cabana
Rarău 14km': this narrow and rocky road is suitable only for 4WD vehicles. Alternatively,
walk it in three to four hours (follow the red circles). A second and slightly better, but un-
marked mountain road accesses the cabana from
Pojorâta
village, 3km west of Câmpu-
lung Moldovenesc. Hiking takes four to five hours (follow the yellow crosses, and turn
left at the fork after the post office, crossing the railway tracks; then turn left along the dirt
road). Cabana Rarău is also accessible from the south, and
Chiril
village, 24km east of
Vatra Dornei
on the main Vatra Dornei-Durău road. This is the best road for drivers.
Hiking takes three to four hours (blue circles).
