Suceava's two train stations, Gara Suceava (aka Gara Burdujeni, Gara Sud or Gara
Principala) and Gara Nord (aka Gara Iţcani), are both roughly 5km north of the centre,
and easily reached by bus or maxitaxi (7 lei). The Agenţia de Voiaj CFR ( Click here )
sells advance tickets. Most trains originate or terminate at the Gara Suceava.
Train services include Gura Humorului (10 lei to 17 lei, 70 minutes, 10 daily) - disem-

Getting Around
The central bus stops at the eastern end of Piaţa 22 Decembrie; all buses to and from the
two train stations arrive and depart from here. Bus 2 runs between the centre and Gara
Suceava. To reach Gara Nord, take Bus 5.
Autonom ( 0748-295 660; suceava@ autonom.ro) offers good car-hire rates.
Bucovina Monasteries
Southern Bucovina's historic monasteries are among the most distinctive in all Christen-
dom. Unusually, some have frescoes both outside and inside. While the region's prevail-
ing winds and rains mean that north-facing exterior walls have largely lost their five-
century-old paintings, frescoes facing other directions have survived - almost a miracle,
considering that the plaster is only 5mm thick on some of the most impressive paintings.
