emigrated after WWII and particularly after 1989, there are still a handful of German
speakers. The town's Jews largely perished in the Holocaust.
Most travellers come here for the chance to ride a steam-powered locomotive high into
the hills, along a narrow-gauge track originally built for transporting logs. It's a grand day
out and combines the thrill of a good ride with a chance to springboard on to a hike into
the upper reaches of the Vaser Valley.
Sleeping
The area immediately surrounding the train station is filled with private pensiunes offering
rooms for around 80 to 90 lei, often including breakfast. The owners may prepare an addi-
tional meal for you for around 20 lei per person.
Pensiunea Stancuta $

ing the early -morning train, Stancuta is 1km past the train station from the centre of town.
The rooms are clean and welcoming, with fine views of the nearby mountains. There's a
large garden and a wood terrace to read on.

lei; ) The Brad is somewhat sorry for itself on the outside, but things are sunnier
within, with cream rooms, firm beds, bureaus, TVs and pine furniture. It's pretty good
value given the price.

of town, Gabriela is reliable, offering clean, modern rooms with verandahs, cable TV, en
suites and hearty breakfasts. The sister restaurant next door bubbles with life and makes
pretty good pizza.
