Street Scams & Annoyances
Romania is a relatively safe country, but there are some common scams to be aware of. Watch out for rip-off taxi
drivers, particularly at airport arrivals halls and train stations. Strangers who approach you speaking in English
and offering rides or claiming to represent a hotel or hostel, are likely to be dodgy. Firmly decline any such ap-
proach.

. Trustworthy taxis will post their rates on the door, with honest drivers charging
anything from 1.40 to 1.80 lei per km.
Stray dogs are an annoyance, but rarely pose a danger. Avoid the temptation to pet the dogs. The best strategy is
to stay out of their way and they will stay out of yours.
