ray of cazare (accommodation) available along the Izei Valley. Note: if you're driving, phone ahead to get precise
directions; if you're planning to arrive by bus or train in Sighet, ask the owner to pick you up at the station.
BÂRSANA
From Vadu Izei continue for 12km through Onceşti to the village of Bârsana (formerly
Bîrsana), dating from 1326. In 1720 it built its first church, the interior paintings of which
were created by local artists Hodor Toador and Ion Plohod.

Bârsana Monastery
(Mănăstirea Bârsana) The famous Orthodox Bârsana Monastery is a popular pilgrimage
spot in Maramureş, but the church you see today was built in the 1990s. The 11am service
is a magical experience among the rolling hills and wildflowers, and every 30 June the
monastery celebrates the 12 Apostles. Check out the beautiful church, shrine, museum and
shop. Eleven nuns presently reside here.

Barsana Art Museum
(Main St; 9am-8pm) Not a museum but a garden workshop, this place is operated by
an artisan whittling wooden carvings, from life-size bears to miniature archways.
