Getting There & Away
Air
The airport ( 0262-293 444) is 9km west of the centre at Tăuţi Măgherăuş. A taxi to
the centre should cost about 40 lei.
Tarom ( 0262-221 624; B-dul Bucureşti 5; 9am-6pm Mon-Fri, to noon Sat) oper-
ates daily flights between Baia Mare and Bucharest (one way about 590 lei).
Bus
Infrequent services run from the bus station ( 0262-221 777; Str Gării 2) to outlying
villages. There are daily buses to Satu Mare (12 lei, one to two hours), Cluj-Napoca
(around 25 lei, three to four hours), and Sighetu Marmaţiei via Baia Sprie (14 lei, two
hours).
Maxitaxis, departing from the bus station, run daily (except Sunday) to Satu Mare (15
lei) and to Bistriţa (about 25 lei). Fulop Impex SRL ( 0745-600 796; www.efitravel.ro/
services.php ) operates an overnight bus service to Budapest (90 lei, 10 hours).
Train
Advance tickets are sold at Agenţia de Voiaj CFR ( 0262-219 113; Str Victoriei 5-7) .
From Baia Mare train station ( 0262-220 950; Str Gării 4) there are around four daily
trains to Satu Mare (7 lei, two hours); two to Bucharest via Braşov (about 104 lei, 13
hours); two to Cluj-N apoca (24 lei, three hours) and one to Timişoara (76 lei, six hours).
At the time of research there were no direct trains to Budapest, but you can catch an early
train (departing 4.30am, arriving 8.30am) to the Hungarian city of Debrecen, from where
there are frequent departures to Budapest (about 55 lei, nine hours).
