Sights
Baia Mare has a number of interesting sights (predominantly in its old centre) to keep you
amused for a few hours before heading to Piaţa Libertăţii for a well-earned coffee break.

Casa Iancu de Hunedoara

(Piaţa Libertăţii 18) Transylvanian prince Iancu de Hunedoara (Jánós Hunyadi in Hun-
garian), royal governor of Hungary between 1446 and 1453, lived in the 15th-century
house Casa Iancu de Hunedoara. In 1456 he successfully thrashed the Turks on the banks
of the Danube, close to Belgrade. Today, his house has temporary exhibitions arranged by
the local history museum.

9am-5pm Tue-Fri, 10am-2pm Sat & Sun) Prince Iancu de Hunedoara's life story, and
that of Baia Mare, is told in the local Archaeology & History Museum. This expansive
complex houses excavation displays, including the mother of all clay-pot collections, ex-
tensive weapons exhibitions, tools, weathered documents, bronze fragments and rooms
devoted to literature, sport, industrial equipment and clocks.

Stephen's Tower

Looming above Piaţa Libertăţii is Stephen's Tower (Turnul Ştefan). The 15th-century
Gothic-style tower was originally topped with a bell, which was replaced by a mechanical
clock in 1628. There's a noticeboard beside the tower with some descriptive information
about the tragic fate of the adjoining church, which survived several fires and was eventu-
ally pulled down by the municipal authorities.
